He won’t regret his decisions. That’s a man’s responsibility.
When we arrived at the studio, we heard a happy song from the make-up room. That was Yunho’s loud song over the sound of the hair dryer. I asked him “Do you always sing during make-up?” and this is the answer I got, “There are lots of times when I sing (laughs). I always want to work happily.”

He looked at us in the eye through the make-up room’s mirror. He gestured with a bright smiling face saying “hello.” He greeted our staff with a handshake, requesting “please take good care of me.” We, along with the cameraman, were drawn into Yunho’s bright face.
Height is 184 cm. His balanced body shines in the Louis Vuitton suit. Step by step, he methodically poses to the beat of Michael Jackson (music) which flows through the studio. With Michael Jackson in his heart, Yunho who appeared at the Seoul tribute concert in March, happily moved his body with the luxurious suit and music.
Yunho debut in 04 (2004) as part of 5 member group DBSK. They gained instant huge popularity in Korea as a group of high school students who were like brothers with their soft looks, excellent dance skills and acapella harmonization singing ability. Keeping their busy schedules, they released their Japanese single in 05 (2005) after working hard in their Japanese lessons. With doing lots of live activities as the formula, they finally succeeded as a top group when they were able to garner 300,000 people for their live tour last year. They were Japan’s new best selling foreign singers.
That was the height of THSK’s popularity but recently, the group’s activities have been stopped and they’re doing solo activities. Guiding the members as THSK’s leader, he challenged his first acting last September in Korea’s MBC drama “Heading to the Ground (No Limit).” It was a drama about growing/maturing from various adversities, coming from a poor home, and unemployed Cha Bong Goon’s soccer team breaking up. “There are many parts that are similar between Cha Bong Goon and me but I’m not like Bong Goon at the start of the drama. That is, his harsh tone. However, his hard working personality no matter what happens is similar to me. I’m also the type to work towards a goal no matter what.”
Are there parts you can sympathize with Bong Goon?
“When he’s in front of someone he dislikes, the excitement of child-like Bong Goon, and even though he just goes with his feelings, he starts to talk more and more to get his own way. As Bong Goon gets more and more cool as he meets various people, he changes into a man. I was also able to grow as well because of playing Bong Goon. Bong Goon still lives inside of me.”
Do you want to be a “man who’s like a man?”
“I think you need a strong sense of responsibility to be “like a man.” If anything happens to my family, girlfriend, or staff who are supportive, I want to definitely protect them. Responsibility is important in my mind. Furthermore, I don’t think I will regret choosing a path of responsibility. I believe something good will definitely come out of it someday even if that path ends in failure.”
Who started influencing you?
“Actually, the person I respect the most is my father. He has a strong sense of responsibility and is a romantic, and because he has a big heart, he guides his friends like a leader. I don’t know, maybe that’s why I might have been strongly affected by that kind of father. All my friends respect my father too. He has great soft charisma. That’s why he’s cool (laughs).”
You are also serving as THSK’s leader.
“I didn’t think to myself that I had qualities of a leader but once I became the leader, it seems like I was awaken to it.”
He wants to become a singer who will remain in a person’s heart.
Who are you aiming to become?
“I was greatly affected by Michael Jackson and James Ingram. As for an actor, Johnny Depp is my role model. I also saw “Alice in Wonderland” with 3D glasses. It was really good. Johnny Depp’s image changes with the project whether it’s a pirate or scissorhands. More than anything, I like his uniqueness. He has a wide range of fans from young kids to adults, I’m a fan also (laughs). Like him, I would also like to wear matching couple clothes and take a picture with my child someday.”
By the way, what do you think of your suit today?
“I like it. I especially like the green shirt inside. Before, I made glasses my fashion point but now I like hats and shoes. I just coordinate according to my feelings that day. My close friends think they know how I am feeling that day by looking at my clothes. Actually, the accessories I wear also have a secret/hidden kind of meaning (laughs).”
The suit looks great on your slim body.
“When I played Bong Goon, I kept my body like a soccer player (with muscles) but after that, I slimmed down for the Michael Jackson tribute concert because artists don’t need big muscles. I did pilates or jogging or stretching.”
Do you want to continue with acting from now on?
“I would like to continue with it. I’m able to experience something that I can’t be by acting a person that is different than the way I am. If you gain lots of experience, wouldn’t it help you to understand the minds of others? I definitely want to give it a try if there’s a good project but saying “I love acting” would be a lie. It’s because I love singing. A song remains forever. Even if I was to disappear from this world, just like Michael Jackson, I think I want to become a singer whose voice and songs will continually remain in the hearts of the people around the world.”
Yunho is masculine, polite, positive, and definitely has a goal. He corresponded this interview entirely in Japanese too. The staff and everyone who met him wants to cheer for him. I got a closer feeling to how many of Yunho’s fans feel supporting him.
