An album that strengthed the bonds between the two of Tohoshinki.
In English, “TONE” has many meanings in relation to music, to color, as well as other things. If they can control even the smallest details, can they step up as artists?
The two of them completed an album they put their passion into.
Changmin: We created it thinking of it as a present for fans. Because it’s the first album [in Japan] since becoming a duo, we put our hearts into every song so that they would be able to see our growth.
Yunho: For Tohoshinki, I think the chorus is also a weapon, so one task was for the two of us was to cover it. There are times where Changmin is the main singer and I do the chorus, and others where I am the main and Changmin does the chorus. With this I think we were able to make a new sound.
Has your bond gotten stronger?
Y: While preparing for the album, I think it has. We understand each other by just looking at one another. Changmin and I have 108 degree opposing styles but…
C: 180 degrees! (he interrupts without delay)
Y: Ahhh! 180 degrees. (embarrassed) Our styles are different, but on the contrary I think we were able to make a new sound.
Did you find a new side to yourselves?
C: To be honest, we’ve been having activities for 8 years, and without realizing it Yunho has become a part of my life. It’s hard to say if this is finding a new side but…
Y: (Breaks out into a big smile while clapping)
C: But I think “Shiawase Iro no Hana” is song where Yunho’s charm as an adult comes out.
Y: For me it’s Changmin’s rap. For Changmin, I think of singing, but he was able to produce a mature rap, and I think this is a new weapon for him.
For your nationwide arena tour next year in January, what kind of tour do you want it do be?
C: We want to show a more mature Tohoshinki with better performances and songs. We also want to express our gratitude to fans who have been waiting a long time.
Y: For me, being on stage is a big thing. It’s not just about giving cool performances, it also conveys the message that “Tohoshinki has come this far.” But of course, being on stage makes me happy. Lately I’ve been feeling very happy. In my personal time, the happiest moments are when I am sleeping in my home (laughs).
C: I also feel happy being on stage. In my private time, I am happy when after finishing a live I can slowly drink a beer and relax.
What are things you expect from each other from here on out?
C: I don’t really demand a lot from people. It doesn’t mean I don’t have expectations but…
Y: I’m shocked (surprised)!
C: I just don’t have big expectations. I’d be happy if we could continue like this.
Y: I’m the same as Changmin. People already know about our friendship, so now I just want to try my best and keep aiming higher.
We want to sing with everyone at our solo concert!
Did you sing for “introduction ~magenta~?”
C: I thought it was like a children’s song. It’s a genre we’ve never done up till now, so we were worried if it would really sound like a real children’s song (laughs). I thought this song would give life to the other tracks, so I sang it with a pure feeling.
Y: I think the intro is a representative of all the tracks. I think this song shows how hard Changmin and I worked to prepare this album.
C: Tohoshinki dance numbers up until now have been mostly intense tracks that leave the person breathless. (Next to him, Yunho breaks out into a big smile!) This song is like that as well, but this time the lyrics are different from the others because we invite the girl directly.
Y: The MV was the first time I filmed an action scene. I do a high kick all of sudden, but at first I wasn’t able to comprehend it (laughs). But because I wanted to show a more mature side of myself, I challenged myself. Also, this was also the first time I used gray color contacts. I don’t really understand contacts (laughs). I think the scenes I did fit well with the dance scenes everyone worked hard on, so I’m very satisfied with it.
What is Duet like?
C: The lyrics are about protecting the one you love no matter what. It’s a manly expression of love.
Y: The title “Duet” resembles us in some ways. You’ll realize that mixed in with Tohoshinki’s style is a new appeal. The lyrics…has Changmin ever experienced them? I have (laughs), so I did the recording while thinking about things in the past.
A new long song was created with a powerful ballad!
What kind of thoughts did you sing “Shiawase-Iro no Hana” with?
C: When I first listened to the demo track, I thought it could become a Tohoshinki ballad number, and the two of us recorded it with our honest feelings. Even when Yunho finished recording, he said “I want to re-record the whole thing!” and redid it about two times. In the album, it is the track that we re-recorded and worked on the most.
Y: We got an OK from the director, but I asked myself about Tohoshinki’s limits and how far we could reach, and I had a feeling like, “We have to do a little more! We can do it!” With that, it’s a long 6 minute and 40 second song. Up until now, we’ve shown everyone magnificent ballads like “Bolero,” but this time it’s in the same genre but just with our two voices. Because of this, we wanted to push ourselves to the limit.
What about Easy Mind?
C: The track has lyrics that are enjoyable and make you forget your stress. I think it’s a song that we can get fired up about with our guests during lives, so I sang it with enthusiasm.
What kind of track is Weep?
Y: We recorded it with a feeling of gratitude. Personally I think it would make a good ending song for our solo concert. I would be happy if everyone could listen to the track and sing along with us.
Are Easy Mind and Weep songs that are directed at the fans?
Y: Yes. We sang it with a feeling of gratitude towards them. When you listen to “Easy Mind,” there’s a strange awkward whistle at the end though (laughs). That’s me singing. It’s because I was tricked by Changmin (laughs). changmin told the director, “Yunho is good at whistling.” Even though I’m really bad at it… but it became an interesting episode because it adds flavor like that. In “Weep” we put our gratitude into the last la-la-la part.
Please tell us about the tracks you like.
Y: For me, it’s the track we recorded a lot, “Shiawase-Iro no Hana.” It’s a big song and part of the ballad genre we’ve shown everyone before. The two of us really worked hard on it, so please check it out!
C: For me, it’s “Why?” I think it’s the track that holds proof that we’ve restarted activities. Also, for this album, I hope that we can show everyone a more mature Tohoshinki.
